Torbay Week
Event Details
Location: Torquay
Date: 23 Aug 2013 - 28 Aug 2013Torbay Week is fast proving to be one of the most popular regattas on the south coast. Sailors of all classes flock to the English Riviera, ready to pit their wits and skills against each other in exciting races, and the event regularly attracts national and international sailing championships. There are plenty of vantage points around the bay, giving everyone the chance to see seamanship at its best.
Visiting sailors are warmly welcomed into the yacht and sailing clubs at Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and Babbacombe with the clubs providing post-race entertainment throughout the week. Within 4 courses out in the bay, there will be several IRC fleets, non-rated yachts, Sonatas, Day Boats and Sportsboats as well as mixed dinghy handicap and junior dinghy fleets.
Two National Championships are also planned as part of the event. The Notice of Race and Entry Forms can be downloaded from www.torbayweek.co.uk. The challenges end with the traditional Passage Race to Dartmouth, ready for the Dartmouth Regatta the following week.
The great thing for visitors is that, whether you’re a boating fanatic or a real land-lubber, there’s as much going on onshore as there is on the waves, for Torbay Week coincides with the Torbay Royal Regatta.
Torbay Royal Regatta Bi Centenary Celebrations will be taking place this year between Saturday 24th and Wednesday 28th August 2013. The Anderton & Rowland Fair will be on Torre Abbey Meadows and will be operating for the whole of the Regatta.
History of Torbay Royal Regatta
The Torbay Royal Regatta originated when an advertisement appeared in Trewman’s Exeter Flying Post offering ‘Two handsome silver cups and other prizes’ to be ‘sailed for’ by ‘gentleman’s boats’ and ‘other boats’.
The Torbay Royal Regatta was the first yachting regatta in the country to gain royal patronage and, as well as organising top class sailing races, the event has variously catered for other sports including: motor boat racing, rowing, running, water-skiing, swimming and diving. The organising committee have also always provided a range of social and recreational facilities for ‘landlubbers’ with a grand ball (since 1813) firework displays (since 1836), funfairs (since 1841) and aerobatic displays by the Red Arrows (since 1988).
The tradition of the regatta is as old as the town itself and, apart from enforced breaks in wartime, the event has continued to flourish and grow in stature for 200 years.
